If I could sleep,
I would have liked to wake
With you and the sun,
Looking at all the reasons and ways
You make everything right.
But in our dreams we weep,
And in our hearts we ache.
For the path we would run
Is now a twisted, frozen maze
Tainted with a malicious blight
That fills my mind
With shadows and doubts
That you are in any way true;
Are even real
Or ever cared.
While I was blind
I walked a short route.
And on it I saw that you
Were too cold to feel.
And I just stared,
Realizing there was nothing I could say,
There was nothing I could have changed
And nothing we would try
That could stop the slipping
Slowly down into the dark.
It's too late by today.
Brothers, a father and daughter, have become estranged
And are now too cold to cry
Those blessed tears, dripping
Have left on each of us a single mark.
That scar will remain
To remind and tell us all
How the winds have turned
Joy to sorrow
And laughter to a sickly fear.
A spring and summer stain,
We were lost before the fall.
The one thing we learned?
Life is not lived tomorrow;
Future is neither promised nor clear.
